He married NANCY ANN UNKNOWN January 16, 1820. She was born February 26, 1804 in North Carolina, and died August 26, 1877 in Shelby County, TX. Notes for REV. WILLIAM DEFEE: William is in the 1830 Dyer County, Tennessee census. At that time he is listed as the only male in the household, with one female 20-30 (Nancy), 1 female 10-15, 1 female 5-10, and 3 females 5 & under. William came to Texas along with his wife, Nancy and several children around 1830-32. They settled first in Sabine County in 1835 after receiving 2/3 of a league of land from the Zavala settlement. In the 1835 Texas Census they were shown as William, Nancy and 7 children. William fought at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, but he is listed as William Duffy. The 1837 Sabine Co, TX tax records show that William owned 12 head of cattle, 1 horse and had a family of 10 persons. Although William and his family are found in the 1850 San Augustine Co census, Sabine County records of 1846 show he sold 207 acres of land to Ben Slaughter and Isaac Foster. In the 1850 census he was listed as a brick mason and he and Nancy had 8 children at home at that time. Marriage records for San Augustine Co., TX show that two daughters (Williamfinee and Jane) are married in that county in 1844. William and Nancy are found in the 1860 Shelby County census. His oldest son, Jasper was living nearby with his family. He is found for the last time in the 1865 Shelby Co. TX tax records along with his sons, Jasper and William P. DeFee. According to the Family Bible, he died on June 22, 1869. His obituary, found in the Gospel Advocate of 1869, states that he died on June 21, 1869 of flu. The obituary states that he moved to Dyer County, Tennessee in 1825 where he was baptized in 1827. More About REV.
